Q1: By how much does 5 exceed -5?

Step 1: To find how much 5 exceeds -5, we subtract -5 from 5.
Step 2: 5 – (-5) = 5 + 5 = 10
Answer: 5 exceeds -5 by 10


Q2: How much -7 less than -1?

Step 1: We subtract -7 from -1.
Step 2: -1 – (-7) = -1 + 7 = 6
Answer: -7 is 6 less than -1


Q3: What must be subtracted from 7 to get -6?

Let the number be x:
7 – x = -6
Step 1: Subtract 7 from both sides:
-x = -6 – 7 = -13
Step 2: Multiply both sides by -1:
x = 13
Answer: 13 must be subtracted from 7 to get -6


Q4: What must be subtracted from -1 to get -19?

Let the number be x:
-1 – x = -19
Step 1: Subtract -1 from both sides:
-x = -19 + 1 = -18
Step 2: Multiply both sides by -1:

Q5: The sum of two integers is -11. If one of them is 5, then find the other.

Let the other number be x:
5 + x = -11
Step 1: Subtract 5 from both sides:
x = -11 – 5 = -16
Answer: The other number is -16


Q6: Add the product of (-13) and (-17) to the quotient of (-187) and 11.

Step 1: (-13) × (-17) = 221
Step 2: (-187) ÷ 11 = -17
Step 3: 221 + (-17) = 221 – 17 = 204
Answer: 204


Q7: A shopkeeper bought a pen for ₹75, a book for ₹240 and a pencil box for ₹46. He sold the pen for ₹81, book for ₹255 and the pencil box for ₹40. What was his gain or loss?

Cost Price (CP): 75 + 240 + 46 = ₹361
Selling Price (SP): 81 + 255 + 40 = ₹376
SP > CP, so it’s a gain.
Gain = SP – CP = 376 – 361 = ₹15
Answer: Gain of ₹15


Q8: A man starts from his home and drives 169 km to the East and then 192 km to the West. How far is he from his home finally and in which direction?

Step 1: Total movement = 192 (West) – 169 (East) = 23 km West
Answer: 23 km to the West


Q9: During a month, the average day temperature of a desert region was and the average night temperature was -6°C. Find the difference between the average day temperature and the average night temperature.

Difference = 43 – (-6) = 43 + 6 = 49°C
Answer: 49°C


Q10: Radhey bought 4 pairs of jeans at ₹1256 each . How much did he pay for the jeans in all?

Total Cost = 4 × 1256 = ₹5024
Answer: ₹5024


Q11: Mathew had no money to pay for his house rent of ₹14240. His 5 friends decided to contribute equally to pay for the rent. How much will each friend pay?

Each friend pays = 14240 ÷ 5 = ₹2848
Answer: ₹2848


Q12: A class of 36 students ₹540 each for the picnic. Out of these, 7 students decided not to go. They Were returned ₹490 each, What amount was on the picnic?

Step 1: Total collected = 36 × 540 = ₹19440
Step 2: Returned = 7 × 490 = ₹3430
Step 3: Spent = 19440 – 3430 = ₹16010
Answer: ₹16010
